Softwood Clears Division"Growing trees absorb CO2 and produce O2. On average a typical tree absorbs, through photosynthesis, the equivalent of 1 tonne of carbon dioxide for every cubic metre's growth, whilst producing the equivalent of 0.7 t of oxygen" Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management. "Every cubic metre of wood used as a substitute for other building materials reduces CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by an average of 1,1 tonnes of CO2. If this is added to the 0.9 tonnes of CO2 stored in the wood, each cubic metre of wood saves a total of 2 tonnes CO2" Dr A Frühwald, Hamburg University This division of MBM handles all our ‘non-structural’ timber, primarily these are high-quality ‘Clears’ from Canada. Cedar is the main species, followed by Douglas Fir and Hemlock. MBM began 40 years ago as a UK/Canadian co-operation. Today those ties still remain in place and we are the exclusive Agent in the UK and Ireland for Western Forest Products Inc, BC. Western Forest Products is considered to be the leading BC coastal sawmilling group, managing the forest areas under its stewardship with great sensitivity and converting harvested logs within its own mills. Their annual available harvest is 7.5 Million cubic metres of which 7.3 million cubic metres are from publicly owned forest. They operate eight sawmills and four further wood-processing plants. Our strong association with Canada also extends to the east, where we maintain a long-term trading connection with J D Irving, also one of Canada’s largest timber producers. Sustainability is uppermost in timber consumers’ minds these days and they can feel reassured that Canada is probably the most closely regulated and environmentally aware of all the world's timber-supply regions; we carry Independently Certified stocks bearing FSC and CSA endorsement. MBM has chain-of-custody for FSC, PEFC and CSA Certified material. Extensive stocks are held at Tilbury Dock both in open storage and under shed. In addition direct shipments from Canada to other nominated ports can be arranged.
